Turkish Women’s Cup 2020: Starlets coach Ouma confident ahead of Tanzania test

By Agnes Amondi,

Kenya women’s national football team, Harambee Starlets coach David Ouma lauded the performance of his team at the just concluded Turkish Women’s Cup where they won the bronze medal after they finished in third behind group winners Chile and first runners up Ghana.

Starlets saw off Northern Ireland by 2-0 in their opening match before a brutal 5-0 defeat to Chile and a 3-1 loss to Ghana. Despite that, Ouma noted that they have picked up a lot of positive experiences from the tournament.

At the same time, he singled out Kariobangi North’s Sylvia Makhungu for her display when she debuted against Northern Ireland U19 from the substitutes bench.

“I would like to congratulate my players for playing well despite calling them when the Women Premier League clubs were in pre-season,”

“Sylvia Makhungu has showcased her skill as she grabbed her opportunity as she played for the national team for the first time during the tournament,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gaspo Women’s midfielder Sheryl Angach was named the best mid-fielder of the tournament.

Attention now shifts to the upcoming Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers. Kenya take on arch rivals Tanzania in April after which the aggregate winner faces either Sao Tome and Principe or DRC for a place in the finals.

The gaffer is confident of their chances against Kilimanjaro Queens whom they beat 2-0 in last year’s CECAFA senior women’s challenge cup final.

“I believe we are now prepared to face Tanzania for AWCON qualifiers in April from the experience we have attained in this tournament,” Ouma said.
